New Vishay Semiconductors VCNL4035X01 Optical Sensor Integrated Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor Designed for Gesture Applications
June 14, 2017 - New Yorker Electronics has announced the release of the new Vishay Semiconductors VCNL4035X01 Optical Sensor Integrated Proximity Sensor (PS) and Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) for Gesture Applications. This new device, a Vishay 2017 Super 12 Featured Product, integrates PS, an ALS and a driver with three inputs for external LEDs / IREDs – combined with I2C interface in one small package.
It incorporates photodiodes, amplifiers and analog-to-digital converting circuits into a single chip by CMOS process. Its superior background light cancellation and outstanding sensitivity allow for a high object detection distance.
The new sensor essentially operates ALS and PS in a parallel structure with 16-bit resolution. An integrated current driver with internal logic drives up to three IREDs for gesture recognition and the FiltronTM technology allows for robust background light cancellation.
The Proximity Sensor relies on intelligent cancellation to reduce cross-talk phenomenon combined with a smart persistence scheme to reduce the PS response time. It is selectable for either 12- or 16-bit PS output data, has a programmable IRED sink current and an immunity to red glow (≥890nm IREDs).
The Ambient Light Sensor has a selectable maximum detection range of 262 / 524 / 1048 / 2096 / 4192 lux with highest sensitivity 0.004 lux/step. This provides a spectrum close to real human eye responses. It also has a high accuracy of ALS ±10% and built-in fluorescent light flicker immunity. It also includes a programmable interrupt function for ALS and PS with upper and lower thresholds with an adjustable persistence to prevent false ALS and PS triggers.
This new Vishay device is used in bulk storage for solid-state drives as well as for wake-up and touch-screen locking functions. This makes it ideal for use in handheld devices, Notebooks and tablet PCs. It is also ideal for backlight and contrast control while and provides 2D and 3D gesture recognition with two or three external emitters to detect swipe gestures.
New Yorker Electronics supplies Vishay discrete semiconductors (diodes, MOSFETs and infrared optoelectronics) and passive electronic components (resistors, inductors and capacitors).
